This taxonomic differentiation of Lls is not superfluous, since structural differences exist between Lls from different taxonomic orders, and significant differences may even exist between Lls found in different genera within an order. L1 elements appear to belong to a subclass of retrotransposons (class 11) and to amplify by a process that includes an RNA intermediate. We begin by describing a consensus L1; that is, those attributes that are thought to be characteristic of all known Lls. We will then describe the differences that characterize specific L1 elements within a species, as well as general differences that appear to exist between different taxonomic

U6 snRNA Pseudogenes: Markers of Retrotransposition Dynamics in Mammals
Transposable elements comprise more than 45% of the human genome and long interspersed nuclear element 1 (LINE-1 or L1) is the only autonomous mobile element remaining active. Since its identification, it has been proposed that L1 contributes to the mobilization and amplification of other cellular RNAs and more recently, experimental demonstrations of this function has been described for many t...
متن کاملA conserved nuclear element with a role in mammalian gene regulation.
Mammalian genomes contain numerous fragments of DNA that are derived from inactivated transposable elements. The accumulation and persistence of these elements is generally attributed to transposase activity rather than through possession or acquisition of a function of value to the host genome. Here we describe such a repetitive element, named ALF (forannexin VILINE-2fragment), comprising 130 ...
متن کاملThe Fine LINE: Methylation Drawing the Cancer Landscape
LINE-1 (L1) is the most abundant mammalian transposable element that comprises nearly 20% of the genome, and nearly half of the mammalian genome has stemmed from L1-mediated mobilization. Expression and retrotransposition of L1 are suppressed by complex mechanisms, where the key role belongs to DNA methylation. Alterations in L1 methylation may lead to aberrant expression of L1 and have been de...
متن کاملMobilization of LINE-1 in irradiated mammary gland tissue may potentially contribute to low dose radiation-induced genomic instability
It is known that cellular stresses such as ionizing radiation activate LINE-1 (long interspersed nuclear element type 1, L1), but the molecular mechanisms of LINE-1 activation have not been fully elucidated. There is a possibility that DNA methylation changes induced by genotoxic stresses might contribute to LINE-1 activation in mammalian cells. L1 insertions usually cause major genomic rearran...
متن کاملAPOBEC3 proteins: major players in intracellular defence against LINE-1-mediated retrotransposition.
Mammalian genomes are littered with enormous numbers of transposable elements interspersed within and between single-copy endogenous genes. The only presently spreading class of human transposable elements comprises non-LTR (long terminal repeat) retrotransposons, which cover approx. 34% of the human genome. Non-LTR retrotransposons include the widespread autonomous LINEs (long interspersed nuc...
متن کاملUse of a mammalian interspersed repetitive (MIR) element in the coding and processing sequences of mammalian genes.
The mammalian interspersed repetitive (MIR) element was amplified in mammals 130 million years ago. The MIR element is at least 260 bp in length and is found in approximately 105 copies in the mammalian genome. We analyzed copies of the MIR element in the DNA of various mammals to determine its relationship to the structure and function of genes, in an attempt to identify specific uses of the M...
